Sandy River Plantation was initially organized in 1859 and has maintained a small but growing population. The plantation is most well known as the home of Saddleback Mountain ski area and for the Appalachian Trail passing through its territory.

Activities

  • Rte 4, Sandy Rock, ME 04970
    • This challenging 4.1-mile round trip on a section of the Appalachian Trail meanders through the forest to the unique Piazza Rock, with the option to continue onward past several ponds and up to Saddleback Mountain.

    • This easy, 1-mile loop offers beautiful views of a series of waterfalls along Cascade Stream and includes a nice picnic area.
  • ME-17 in Township D or Rte 4 in Sandy River, ME
    • This 6,000-acre expanse of public land has a lot to offer! The Appalachian Trail winds through the property, passing the beautiful Sabbath Day Pond and its lean-to, as well as the Little Swift River Pond and its primitive campsite. This is a great destination for hiking a section of the Trail, swimming, and snowmobiling in the wintertime.

    • This classic º£½ÇÉçÇø ski resort, one of º£½ÇÉçÇø’s most prominent and offering some of the highest elevation lift access in New England, is back! Offers great skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer, a cafe for breakfast and lunch, a pub, and the unique outdoor Fat Tire Mountain Bar, all based out of their mountain lodge.
