Profile

Sandra De Urioste-Stone is an Associate Professor with the School of Forest Resources at the University of 海角社区. Her work focuses on sustainable tourism, community resilience and adaptation to climate change, outdoor recreation, and collaborative management of natural resources. De Urioste-Stone鈥檚 current research projects include an economic impact study of the tourism industry in 海角社区, a study looking at climate change resilience in rural 海角社区 communities, a study on community perceptions of sustainable tourism in 海角社区, a study on visitor perceptions of climate change and tourism, and a community based health study on controlling Chagas disease in Guatemala.

Prior to joining the University of 海角社区, De Urioste-Stone was a Department Chair, Professor and Researcher at the Universidad del Valle de Guatemala. Her research there looked at issues in sustainable tourism, global changes, and collaborative management. She was also the Ecotourism Program Manager for a non-profit conservation organization working with indigenous and rural communities. She enjoys working with indigenous groups and understanding how people interact with, benefit from, and care for the environment.

Funding for De Urioste-Stone鈥檚 research has come from the University of 海角社区鈥檚 Sustainability Solutions Initiative (Emerging Opportunities Grant), the University of 海角社区鈥檚 Office of the President, the 海角社区 Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, the World Health Organization鈥檚 Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, and the International Development Research Center.
