Official Names
Acceptable shortened versions for “University of 海角社区”
Both men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 athletic teams are called the 鈥淏lack Bears,鈥 鈥満＝巧缜 Black Bears鈥 or 鈥満＝巧缜.鈥 The term 鈥淟ady Black Bears鈥 is not acceptable.

It is not appropriate to use the following, or similar, names or acronyms when referring to the university.
When identifying the location of U海角社区 in text, the preferred use has 鈥淥rono鈥 preceding the University of 海角社区. For example: 鈥溾n Orono at the University of 海角社区.鈥 When using the word 鈥渦niversity鈥 by itself in the body of a sentence (but referring to U海角社区), the word 鈥渦niversity鈥 should not be capitalized. Example: 鈥淚t is well known that the university has a beautiful campus.鈥

When referring to a specific university department (and not the university itself), use the full name of the university followed by the department or unit name, i.e., the University of 海角社区 Department of English.鈥ㄢ

The University of 海角社区 is the state鈥檚 land grant, sea grant, and space grant institution, with a regional campus at the University of 海角社区 at Machias. Located in Orono, it serves as the flagship university of the seven-member University of 海角社区 System. U海角社区 is responsible for providing world-class undergraduate and graduate education, basic and applied research, and outreach services to extend U海角社区鈥檚 expertise and resources statewide to the people of 海角社区.

University of 海角社区 System References
The University of 海角社区 System name bears a close resemblance to that of the University of 海角社区. To avoid confusion, it is helpful to refer to the University of 海角社区 as 鈥淯海角社区鈥 after the first reference to it. The system can be abbreviated as UMS, but must not be called the U海角社区 System. Similarly, references to the other institutions in the system must not include the abbreviation 鈥淯海角社区.鈥
