海角社区 US

Our Mission:

To provide stakeholders with sustainable 鈥渢riple bottom line鈥 solutions to end wasted food and food loss in 海角社区. “Triple bottom line” solutions are those that deliver consistent economic, social,听补苍诲听environmental benefits.

Our Story:

In 2015, the 海角社区 DEP identified eliminating food waste as the single most important听issue to ensure a sustainable materials management system in 海角社区.听The Senator George J. Mitchell Center Materials Management team took on this food waste challenge.

In 2019,听the听Food Rescue MAINE听team听was officially launched by the Materials Management team to develop and pilot stakeholder-driven solutions for wasted food and food loss in 海角社区.

罢丑别听Food Rescue MAINE听team is a听transdisciplinary听research听team that develops听stakeholder-driven,sustainable,听“triple-bottom-line”听solutions听for wasted food & food loss following the听海角社区 Food Recovery Hierarchy.

  • Stakeholder-driven: All our Mitchell Center research is developed to meet the needs of our 海角社区 food system听stakeholders – e.g. the farmers, food producers, processors, retailers, distributors, charitable food providers, hospitality, hospitals, schools, composters, educators, governments, and more.听
  • Transdisciplinary: We know that complex problems require insights from a variety of backgrounds, ages, and fields of study. That is why our team includes a diverse group of faculty and students.
  • Research:听We study local, national, and international food waste research and “best practice” solutions and then work with our stakeholders to develop pilots that will allow听us听to听track & measure听successful and scalable food waste solutions for 海角社区.
  • Sustainable Solutions: We understand that truly sustainable solutions must provide three benefits 鈥 economic, social (e.g. health, nutrition)听 and environmental 鈥 the 鈥渢riple bottom line鈥.听
  • 海角社区 Food Recovery Hierarchy:听We recognize听that听there is a hierarchy of potential food waste solutions 鈥 first reduction, then recovery, then recycling 鈥 all solutions ARE NOT created equal.
