{"id":48250,"date":"2023-06-06T09:50:21","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T13:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/research\/?p=48250"},"modified":"2023-07-10T15:17:25","modified_gmt":"2023-07-10T19:17:25","slug":"university-of-maine-system-request-for-ideas-internal-grant-awards-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/umaine.edu\/research\/2023\/06\/06\/university-of-maine-system-request-for-ideas-internal-grant-awards-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"University of 海角社区 System Request for Ideas internal grant awards announced"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In October 2022 the Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation, Joan Ferrini-Mundy, invited faculty and staff across the University of 海角社区 System (UMS) to put forward their ideas for research, innovation, and development that could be supported or further developed by internal and external funding and\/or the formation of collaborative intercampus teams.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/umaine.infoready4.com\/#competitionDetail\/1882337\">UMS Request for Ideas<\/a> process garnered well over 100 submissions. Many of these were taken up for presentation to external sponsors, while some were directed towards congressionally directed funding requests.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the applicant pool was reviewed by a multidisciplinary, and multi-institution, team looking for alignment with the UMS Research Reinvestment Fund (RRF), which aims to promote intercampus research and development collaborations, enhance research competitiveness for System campuses, and support undergraduate and graduate students with paid research experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following projects have been selected for UMS RRF support for FY 2023:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Collaboratives&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This RRF funding program supports interdisciplinary and intercampus teams as they advance a novel research agenda with the help of funded undergraduate research assistants.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cAssessing Municipal Digital Service Provision in 海角社区.\u201d Vanessa Levesque (USM) and Kathleen Bell (U海角社区).<\/li><li>\u201cSupporting Faculty Development through Experiential Student Learning.\u201d Nicholas Giudice (U海角社区) &#8211; open call to all UMS faculty to apply through a competitive process.<\/li><li>\u201cUMS Outdoor Community Learning.\u201d IURC-development project facilitated by the Office of Research Development and&nbsp; jointly led by Kennedy Rubert-Nason (UMFK), Lauren Jacobs (U海角社区), and Uriah Anderson (UMM).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seed Grants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>RRF Seed Grants provide funding for 12-month projects that generate pilot data, proof of concept testing, and target specific follow-on grant opportunities to leverage the investment of RRF funds by attracting additional funding to the University. Seed grant teams are composed of UMS researchers and external partners. Funding preference is given to projects that are able to demonstrate the likelihood of near-term commercialization and\/or workforce development output.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cWabanaki Language Resource Centers.\u201d Conor Quinn (USM) and Dana McDaniel (USM).<\/li><li>\u201cUsing wood-based nanofibrillated structures to treat solid tumors.\u201d Bashir Khoda (U海角社区).<\/li><li>\u201cNorth-South Environment &amp; Health Research Training Network.\u201d Juyoung Shim (UMA).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Planning Grants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>RRF Planning Grants provide funding for 6-month projects that allow research teams composed of UMS researchers and\/or external partners to form and develop plans to advance and develop research, development, commercialization, proposal writing projects.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cUMS TRANSFORMS Ideas Lab and Initiative Connector\u201d Office of Research Development and UMS TRANSFORMS staff will bring together 5 UMS teams to identify alignment between their concept papers and the larger goals of the Alfond Grant through a series of facilitated brainstorming meetings.&nbsp;<\/li><li>\u201cPlanning Support for UMS Ed.D. Program.\u201d Jim Artesani (U海角社区) and Joo-Young Lee (U海角社区)<\/li><li>\u201cVision Plan for the University of 海角社区 One Health and the Environment Program.\u201d Allison Gardner (U海角社区).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Student Grants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>RRF Student Grants provide funding for UMS faculty\/staff led research, development, and commercialization projects that involve UMS students as major contributors to the execution of the project.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cCultivating and Calibrating a Teacher\u2019s Moral Center.\u201d Cara Furman (UMF) and Virginia Dearani (U海角社区).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flagship Postdoctoral Fellowship Program<\/strong>. Directed and competitively-awarded postdoctoral research fellowships to enhance the research environment and increase research capacity.&nbsp; Strong preference given to projects that demonstrate a clear funding path for support beyond the one-year term sustained by the fellowship, including cost-share pledged by external entities such as industry, government, philanthropic sponsors, and
