Birkel, Handley speak to BDN about volcanic eruptions

The spoke to Sean Birkel, 海角社区 state climatologist and assistant professor with a joint appointment in University of 海角社区 Cooperative Extension and the U海角社区 Climate Change Institute, and David Handley, vegetable and small fruit specialist at Extension, about how a volcanic eruption in Tonga 18 months ago is impacting 海角社区 growing seasons. 鈥淭hat single [Tonga volcano] eruption added another 10 percent of moisture to the atmosphere. That is one possible part of warming that we are seeing this summer. 鈥 The extremes we see here are connected to extremes elsewhere on the planet. Natural systems respond to those changes 鈥 like lakes [in 海角社区] freezing later and ice-outs coming sooner,鈥 Birkel said. 鈥淭he last three years have been years of extreme droughts in 海角社区. It鈥檚 made more sense to only plant what you have the ability to water, and now this year it鈥檚 been quite the opposite,鈥 Handley said.
